Free Opportunities for TWO ACT tests!

The Department of Health Physical Education and Sport Sciences at Arkansas State University has a graduate student who is conducting a study under the tutelage of her faculty supervisor Dr. Blair Dean.  The study, which is titled The Effects of Acute Exercise on an ACT Prep Test and Profile of Mood States, needs 20 participants. Participants must be 14 – 17 years of age in high school. The study will take place on November 2nd and November 9th. It will start promptly at 8:00 am. Participants must be present BOTH days in order to qualify. If you believe you have students interested in participating in the study, please contact have your student visit with Ms. Pharis.  There is a packet that must be submitted!

Participants will be able to take TWO separate ACT Prep Tests at no cost of their own. The ACT Prep Tests will include the sections Math, Reading, Science, and English. Participants will also receive a small gift bag of donations from local Arkansas business.

Participants must complete all parts of the participant packet. The participant packet includes a description of the study, assent form, consent form, National Academy of Sports Medicine Data Collection Sheet, and a demographic questionnaire. Participants will participate in two administration periods, each for approximately four hours for a total duration of eight hours. Participants must be present for both administration periods. During the administration periods participants will partake in the physical activity time, a short mood test, and then take the ACT Prep Test. During administration period one and two participants will alternate either performing 30 minutes of moderate intensity treadmill walking or remain sedentary during the physical activity time.

This study is being conducted to better understand the effects of acute exercise on brain function specifically to benefit the ACT. This study will determine whether acute exercise effects students’ scores on an ACT Prep Test and student’s mood going into an ACT Prep Test. This research will help students, teachers, and parents to better understand how to prepare for the ACT.
